Iris closed before wormhole established?

Well, (as seen in "A Hundred Days" 3.17), it's explained that it's possible that an iris is too close to the event horizon to allow the gate to form an unstable vortex even though the gate still opens. A little hole in the iris would cause the vortex to destroy it.
