How do you create a hole in the fabric of space, to create an artificial wormhole, and jump threw space?

Im interested in hearing your theories on how to jump threw space like in the movies (wing commander for example) there has to be a way. My theory is a very powerfull laser beam, about the power of the sun, fired to a micro point in space. would this work? would it be powerfull and small enough to rip open space and cause a wormhole or portal to explode and take shape in front of your spacecraft.
