It is illegal in the US to not sign up for the selective service (if you are male). It isn't putting your life in danger as it is simply making sure that if there is ever a draft again, it will be fair. Just because you don't sign up for the SS now, doesn't mean you won't receive a letter asking why you didn't and requiring that you do. If you ever need any sort of government assistance, you can be turned away if you are not registered. To get federal loans, you must fill out the FAFSA and to do that, you must be registered with the SS. It's not a big deal as most likely there will not be a draft. If there is a draft, you will most likely not be drafted. If you are a full-time college student during the draft, you will not have to join the armed forces. Hope that helps.
